Holiday Events in Fredericksburg, Stafford & Spotsylvania: A December 2026 Guide

By Barbara Jennings & Douglas Jennings · October 1, 2026

December in the Fredericksburg region means small-town holiday traditions: parades down historic streets, tree lightings along the Rappahannock, and neighborhoods glowing with lights. This guide rounds up the holiday events in Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania for December 2026, with dates where they are confirmed and practical tips for making the most of the season.

Fredericksburg

Downtown Fredericksburg is the heart of the region's holiday calendar, with the Christmas parade as the centerpiece.

  • Fredericksburg Christmas Parade · Saturday, December 5, 2026, at 5:30 p.m., downtown along Caroline and Princess Anne Streets. The 2026 theme is "A Timeless Christmas," and the parade is free and held rain or shine, a beloved community tradition that draws families from across the region.
  • Downtown tree lighting at Riverfront Park · an annual tradition with music, performances, and food trucks, typically held ahead of the parade. The 2026 date had not been posted at the time of writing, so check the city's holiday events page as the season approaches.
  • Holiday lights around town · local guides such as Macaroni Kid's Fredericksburg holiday lights map track standout displays across the city and counties. One well-known stop is "The Home of The Rescued Misfits" at 619 White Oak Road in Fredericksburg, listed as running December 1 through 31, 2026.

Downtown parking fills quickly on parade night. Arrive early, consider parking a few blocks out and walking in, and bring warm layers since the parade runs after sunset.

Stafford

Stafford's Christmas parade is held on the third Saturday of December each year, which in 2026 falls on December 19. In recent years it has stepped off at 3 p.m. at John Lee Pratt Memorial Park on River Road, with floats, bands, and community groups. The 2026 date had not yet been posted by organizers at the time of writing, so confirm on the parade's official page before you go.

An afternoon parade has a real advantage for retirees: milder daylight temperatures, easier parking, and plenty of time to be home before dark.

Spotsylvania

Spotsylvania's annual Christmas parade takes place in the Historic Courthouse District and has traditionally been held on the first Saturday in December. The 48th annual parade was held December 6, 2025, so the 2026 parade is expected on the first Saturday of December, December 5, 2026, but the county had not yet confirmed the date at the time of writing. Check the Spotsylvania County events page as the season gets closer.

The Courthouse Village setting, with its historic buildings and holiday lights, makes this one of the more scenic parades in the region, and it pairs well with a meal at one of the nearby restaurants.

Tips for Enjoying the Season

  • Confirm dates before you go. Organizers post final dates and times late in the season, and weather can shift schedules. Check the official city, county, and organizer pages in early December.
  • Arrive early and dress warmly. Evening parades and tree lightings are outdoor events; layers, gloves, and comfortable walking shoes make the difference between a good night and a cold one.
  • Make it a full outing. Book a downtown dinner reservation for parade night, or turn a light-display drive into a thermos-of-hot-chocolate evening with the grandkids.
  • Consider accessibility. Parades along Caroline and Princess Anne Streets offer curbside viewing, and the flat riverside paths near Riverfront Park are stroller- and walker-friendly.
