Pumpkin Patches and Apple Orchards Near Fredericksburg, VA

By Barbara Jennings & Douglas Jennings · September 15, 2026

Autumn in the Fredericksburg region means pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and pick-your-own apple orchards just a short drive from home. For retirees who have traded a big yard for a smaller, low-maintenance home, these farms are the perfect way to enjoy the fall season without the upkeep. This guide rounds up the top spots near Fredericksburg and Stafford, from the big festival farms to quiet orchards in the Piedmont.

Belvedere Plantation: The Region's Biggest Fall Festival

At 1410 Belvedere Drive in the 22408 area of Spotsylvania County, Belvedere Plantation is a 645-acre heritage farm that traces its roots to the 1760s, sitting along the Rappahannock River just outside Fredericksburg. Its Fall Harvest Festival runs from mid-September into early November and includes a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, a large cornfield maze, hayrides, bonfires, pedal tractors, and farm animals. It is the closest thing the region has to a full-scale autumn festival and draws visitors all season.

For a leisurely, senior-friendly visit, aim for a weekday morning, when the grounds are quieter and hayrides have shorter lines. Check the farm's website and social pages before you go, since fall hours and ticket details change from year to year.

Braehead Farm: A Working Farm Inside the City

Tucked at 1130 Tyler Street in Fredericksburg, Braehead Farm has been a family farm since 1937 and is the last working farm inside the Fredericksburg city limits, about five minutes from downtown. Its Fall Festival runs on weekends from late September through late October, with hayrides through a decorated forest, a corn maze with interactive games, a sunflower walk, and a pumpkin patch.

Because it is so close to town, Braehead is an easy morning or afternoon outing, and a good stop to pair with lunch in the historic district. It also teaches visitors a lot about small-scale farming, with its animals and seasonal crops on display.

Hartland Orchard: Apples, Cider, and Donuts

For pick-your-own apples, Hartland Orchard at 3205 Hartland Lane in Markham, Virginia, is a favorite Piedmont destination. The orchard opens for apple picking in August, hosts a fall festival around mid-September with a corn maze and play areas, and offers pumpkins through October. Its apple donuts and cider are a reliable post-picking treat, and the drive from Fredericksburg runs through some of the region's prettiest countryside.

Stribling Orchard: A Sixth-Generation Family Orchard

Also in Markham, near Hartland, Stribling Orchard is a nearly 200-year-old, sixth-generation family orchard with an on-site bakery, farm animals, fresh cider, apples, and pumpkins. It tends to feel quieter and more old-fashioned than the large festival farms, which suits visitors who want a relaxed afternoon. Stribling and Hartland sit close enough together that some visitors make a day of both, with a stop for lunch in between.

Graves Mountain Lodge: Worth the Longest Drive

If you do not mind a longer day trip, Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, Virginia, in Madison County, hosts an annual Apple Harvest Festival with pick-your-own orchards, hayrides, pony rides, and a petting zoo. It is the longest drive of this group, but the mountain setting and the scale of the festival make it a favorite for families with grandchildren visiting for the fall. Consider it a full-day excursion with lunch at the lodge.

A Note About Westmoreland Berry Farm

Longtime locals may remember Westmoreland Berry Farm in Oak Grove near Colonial Beach, which many regional guides listed for years as a fall destination. It has been reported permanently closed to the public since 2020, so plan your trip around the farms listed above instead of heading there on an old recommendation.

Tips for a Comfortable Farm Day

A little planning makes a farm visit easy and enjoyable for retirees:

  • Go midweek or early in the morning, when crowds are smallest and parking is easy
  • Check the farm's website or social pages before driving, since hours and ticket policies shift seasonally
  • Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes; orchards and corn mazes mean uneven ground
  • Bring water and a snack, and ask about hayride accessibility if that matters to you
  • Bring grandchildren if you have them; most farms design their mazes and animal areas with kids in mind
